Qantas NDC FAQs

Curious about how Qantas’ NDC rollout affects your travel program? These FAQs cover the basics — what’s changing, what’s not, and what it means for you.

If you’ve turned NDC on:

What changes should I expect with NDC turned on?

You’ll see more live, dynamic pricing from Qantas – including their most competitive fares and richer content.

You’ll follow the same change and cancel processes you use today.

At the moment, you can only use the value of your ticket in credit towards a new booking using the same content as originally booked. So that means an older (traditional EDIFACT) ticket can only be used to purchase another EDIFACT ticket and NDC can only be used towards NDC.

In both cases the use of the ticket in credit must be managed offline with our team.

Yes. At the time of writing, frequent flyers will still earn frequent flyer points and status credits when they book either Qantas NDC or EDIFACT fares. As with all frequent flyer programs, the airline can change how you accrue points when you travel.

Yes. You sure can!

If you haven’t turned NDC on:

Potentially, yes. Some NDC fares may be cheaper than traditional options. However, while the fare rules are largely the same, the current limitations in how credits are processed can make them feel more restrictive in practice.

We’ll continue to monitor this and will provide you with updates as things change.

No – for now, you’re still getting the best mix of flexibility and value through traditional channels. We’ll keep you updated as NDC evolves.

Absolutely. Nothing changes in how we support you – whether you book via NDC or traditional GDS channels, we’re here to make sure you’re looked after.

We’re watching the roll-out closely and will tell you when the benefits outweigh any trade-offs for your travel program.

General FAQs:

Traditional bookings use EDIFACT – an older technology standard – shared through Global Distribution Platforms (GDS) like Amadeus (which we use at Platinum), Sabre and Travelport.

From 1 July, Qantas will charge a surcharge from* $11.50 + GST per segment (direct flight leg) for bookings made through EDIFACT content to encourage the shift to NDC.

No. Many other airlines, including Air France-KLM, Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Lufthansa have rolled out NDC, and it’s very common in the US.

Qantas is just the focus in the Australian market right now.
